Subject: Raccoon Population

Friends,

We have responded to several calls recently involving
raccoons behaving strangely. The City of Mobile Animal
Shelter has issued a notice to the public, which I want to
provide to you at this time. I believe several of these raccoons have been caught in the Oakleigh Community.

The Animal Shelter has been working with the USDA Wildlife Services when encountering raccoons that appear to be acting out of character. Of the 217 raccoons that the Animal Shelter has encountered, none have tested positive for rabies. The raccoons could have distemper, which has similar symptoms as rabies.

The Animal Shelter wants to remind you to have your pets vaccinated for rabies and distemper, especially if your pet food, water bowl, or pet, are kept outside. These diseases may be passed on to your pets by the animals drinking or eating from your pet’s bowls.

If you observe a sick acting raccoon in the City of Mobile, please call the City of Mobile Animal Shelter at 208-2800. For more information about the USDA Wildlife Services, please contact Dana Johnson at 334-301-1417.

Sincerely,

Captain Eddie Patrick
